Visitors are encouraged to choose three of the following landmarks and cultural institutions for the Dakar portion of the tour.
Visit Africa’s colossus: the towering African Renaissance Monument whose controversial history is as intriguing as the culture it seeks to symbolize. Tour the Museum of Black Civilizations where the gorgeous architecture is as compelling as the collections. Independence Square lets you know what Senegalese are celebrating – whether it is Christmas (in this 90% muslim country), or becoming Africa’s soccer champions. And there is the Dakar Railway Station with its preserved colonial architecture, the Mosque of Divinity and its adjacent fishing community, the Cathedral of Dakar and much more.
Just offshore from Dakar lies Gorée Island — a living, working community where daily life unfolds alongside some of the most significant chapters of world history.

Today it is one of the most popular destinations on the African Continent for reflection and education about that dark chapter in human history. Gorée Island is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Gorée is more than preserved history. In addition to its museums, Gorée Island is home to a thriving Senegalese community with artists and art markets, shopkeepers, restaurateurs and more. Its throwback cobblestone streets and colonial architecture lend whimsy and charm. The Island’s small beach is inviting and the local cuisine is delicious.
After visiting the museums and other historical and cultural landmarks, you can wander the island and enjoy the views.
