Dakar • SINE SALOUM

The Paradise of Senegal

The Sine Saloum Delta – a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a sanctuary of winding waterways through mangroves, and culturally diverse fishing villages. Peaceful and picturesque, it is ideal for travellers seeking tranquility, beautiful landscapes and rich biodiversity after the pulse of Dakar.

Village of Mar Lodj

In Mar Lodj, old customs and traditional ways of life persist. Transport is mainly by pirogue and horse drawn buggies. Many communal activities occur in a village square. Important events like births and death are communicated using a “drumphone.” Village artisans create sand art and sell local honey and confitures.

The most fascinating and intriguing experience for me was being able to witness Senegalese wrestling in Mar Lodj. This sport is an event that engages all of the senses! From the musicians and griots to the teens, grandmas and babies, everyone showed up to cheer or their favorite athlete.

Multiple matches occur at once. Athletes are in the ring with their spiritual leaders performing rituals in preparation for their matches. Each wrestler has a signature dance the shows the power in their legs and arms. Their children dance on the sidelines encouraging them. It was WILD and exciting and fun!

Ecolodge in Sine Saloum

There are several lodges and eco lodges in the Sine Saloum area for every taste and budget.

Private Boat Picnic

SHIMA Travel Tours offers visitors to Sine Saloum a private boat tour with a picnic where you can catch and prepare (or help prepare) your own meal. This was a huge highlight of the trip for me.
