A trip to Saint-Louis gives visitors a chance to slow down. We recommend at least two nights in Saint-Louis. Visit the museums, including the Musée de la Photographie de Saint-Louis, sample local thieboudienne and enjoy a sunset tour of the island by horse carriage. Our guides take you to the fishing communities of Ndar for a cultural experience. Depending on the time of year, the Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary – one of the most important bird sanctuaries in the world – is included in the SHIMA itinerary.

Favorite Videos: Sunset Horse Carriage Tour
After my first trip to Senegal, I became obsessed with Senegalese music. I watched tons of music videos. I was surprised and kinda chuckled about the seemingly random appearance of horses in the music videos. I wondered – “why did Senegalese artists seem to love horses so much”? After my second trip, my question was answered. Horses (and donkeys) are an integral part of Senegalese society outside of Dakar. Horse carriages and buggies are used for primary transportation in many regions – not just for quaint tourist experiences.
I was also amazed by how horse carriages, cars, motorcycles, buses and pedestrians shared the roads in the most casual unhurried fashion in Saint-Louis. As a New Yorker, the absence of honking, yelling and irritation was remarkable.
